Application-Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC)
An ASIC is a custom chip, designed for a specific purpose.
Compared to writing software on a micro-controller, or even an FPGA, an ASIC will usually have much higher performance, and lower power draw.
The main downsides are the long lead time, minimum order quantity, and implementation complexity compared to an FPGA. For low volume products, making an ASIC is usually too expensive.
