Capsule Communicator (CAPCOM)
In manned spaceflight missions, the Capsule Communicator (CAPCOM) is the person in the Mission Control Centre (MCC) that talks, or authorises others, to talk to the astronauts.
The CAPCOM is intended to streamline communications with the astronauts. They are a familiar voice, synthetising the information collected on ground, and limiting the number of people talking to the astronaut at any time.
Traditionally, CAPCOM is an active duty astronaut, but with the advent of the International Space Station (ISS), the position has been opened to civilians, to relieve the burden on the astronaut corps.
